Their sounds aren't a pleasure meter
Loud doesn't mean more into it, quiet doesn't mean less — sexual sounds carry information, but not enough to be read. Here's where the reading stops and the asking starts.
- Vocal sounds during sex
The moans, groans, sighs, breathing, gasps, and words people make during sex — sounds that happen somewhere between fully spontaneous and fully chosen, and that land on the listener as if they were a readout.
What this isn't
- Vocal sounds are not a diagnosis — how loud or quiet someone is says nothing about whether their sexual response is 'normal' or 'working.'
- They are not a pleasure meter — the sounds correlate with arousal on average across studies, but they are not a reliable measure of how much a specific person is enjoying a specific moment.
- And they are not consent — a moan is not a yes. Only words or an explicit, previously agreed signal can carry that weight.
Where this comes from
The 'louder = more into it' equation is learned, not discovered. Popular narratives — porn above all — treat sound as the universal language of sex: performance, effect, proof. The script has a direction, too: it has mostly told one side of the bed to be audible and the other side to read the sounds. Neither half of that script was chosen by you; both halves can be unlearned.
Researchers have actually studied these sounds. In two questionnaire studies with 71 heterosexual women, orgasm was most often reported during foreplay, while vocal sounds were most often reported just before or at the same time as the partner's ejaculation — the sounds and the woman's own orgasm didn't line up in time. A larger survey of 403 women found the same pattern: vocalization wasn't linked to whether orgasm happened.
So the sounds are fakeable at a meaningful rate — about 38% of women in that survey reported having pretended vocal sounds, and pretending sounds tracked pretending orgasms. In a study of US college students, a quarter of men and half of women reported having pretended an orgasm at least once, most often for reasons aimed at the partner or the encounter: pleasing the partner, protecting their feelings, or wanting sex to end.
One honest complication: the sounds aren't empty either. In the 403-women survey, the frequency and intensity of vocal sounds were positively associated with arousal during that encounter. Louder often does track more arousal on average — but a correlation across hundreds of people says nothing reliable about the one person in front of you, and nothing at all about how close they are to orgasm.
A scope note: these studies drew on young, Western, mostly heterosexual women's self-reports. The sounds described here are human and universal enough, but the evidence base is narrower than the question.
Myth & reality
The louder they get, the more they're enjoying it — sound level tracks pleasure, and peak sound means peak pleasure.
The timing doesn't support the meter reading. In the two questionnaire studies of 71 women described above, vocal sounds clustered around the partner's ejaculation while the women's own orgasms clustered elsewhere — and the researchers' reading was that at least part of vocalizing is under conscious control, available for shaping the encounter rather than just leaking out of it. A larger survey of 403 women again found no link between vocal sounds and orgasm occurring.
The sounds aren't nothing — they did track arousal on average. But 'louder people tend to be more aroused across hundreds of reports' and 'their sounds right now measure their pleasure' are different claims, and only the first one has evidence. Plenty of genuine arousal and orgasm happens quietly; a fair share of enthusiastic sound can be kindness, habit, or theater.
Both sexes run this bluff. A quarter of men and half of women in the college sample had pretended an orgasm; pretending is precisely the case where the signal is loudest and least connected to what it's supposed to signal.
Why it matters
Reading volume as a meter cuts both ways. It inflates confidence in what's going well — you escalate on a misread. And it quietly grades your partner: 'not loud enough' becomes a criticism to make out loud or a resentment to keep, and the pressure to perform audible enjoyment makes real enjoyment harder.
If they're quiet, they're not feeling much — silence means not into it, not engaged, or something wrong with you.
How much sound a person makes is mostly temperament and habit, and quiet is one of the ordinary ways arousal, pleasure, and even intense orgasm show up — or don't show. This is an editorial position grounded in the plain variability of human response, not a laboratory finding; there is no study that measured 'quiet' directly.
What has been measured is the silence around talking. In a U.S. nationally representative survey of 1,008 women, 55.4% had wanted to say something about sex to a partner and decided not to — mostly to avoid hurting their feelings (42.4%), because going into detail felt uncomfortable (40.2%), or out of embarrassment (37.7%). That's inhibition, not absence: the wanting-to-say was there and got held back.
So quiet has at least two very different engines — a quiet way of being, and a muted way of holding back. The sound level alone can't tell you which one you're hearing. That's exactly why the answer is asking, not louder decoding.
Why it matters
Misreading quiet as rejection turns a difference in temperament into a relationship verdict — and the fix people reach for (pressuring a partner to be more vocal, 'give me something') manufactures performed sound, which then can't be trusted by anyone. The person being read as 'not into it' is often into it; the person doing the reading ends up anxious about a problem that isn't there.
As long as they're making sounds, things are good — sound means comfortable, willing, good to keep going.
The sound itself can't carry that. The same moan can come from pleasure, from pain, from going along with it, or from performing the script — and there's no evidence that sound alone reliably tells you which. A sound is evidence that something is happening, never solid evidence of what.
'Yes,' 'keep going,' 'right there' — those are words, and words do carry the meaning. This myth targets the moans and breathing, not consent expressed out loud. If you're unsure, the move is to ask — and the nonverbal-sound-isn't-consent principle runs in the family of a rule worth knowing whole: silence isn't consent either.
Why it matters
Treating sounds as a green light lets someone escalate past what a partner actually wants — the sounds may be discomfort, endurance, or politeness, and the gap between the sound and the willingness only widens as things continue. It also teaches the quieter partner that their actual agreement or refusal is unnecessary paperwork.
One sound, several possible sources

When this isn't a reading problem
The practical boundary of this whole article: when you're unsure what a sound means, slow down and ask — 'does this feel good?' costs one sentence. That's not a magic move either; some people will say 'yeah, it's fine' to keep the mood, and asking mid-sex isn't the only doorway. Talking in bed is one skill; talking about sex with clothes on, before or after, is often the lower-pressure version of the same conversation.
What the research supports is broader: couples who communicate about sex report more satisfaction in their sex lives and relationships, and people who do talk during sex mostly describe it as deepening pleasure and closeness.
One real exception to 'sounds are unreadable': sounds you have explicitly agreed on. If you've arranged that a specific sound, word, or rhythm means something — a signal to slow down, stop, or switch — then it carries that agreed meaning. This article is about unagreed sounds.
Two signals stop being interpretation questions. Sound that changes abruptly or sharpens into something that could be pain, a body going stiff and still, someone suddenly far away — stop and check in, don't weigh the evidence. Suspected pain gets stopped, not asked about. And pain misread as pleasure is not symmetric with pleasure misread as performance — one costs a mood, the other can hurt someone.
For partners who are quiet as a baseline: their 'something's wrong' signal probably doesn't live in the sound channel at all. With someone consistently low-expressive, the same 'just ask' rule applies — but ask in the calm hours, not only in the moment, and let the answers build a map over time rather than re-interrogating each encounter.
And the reverse reminder, because it's easy to forget: a quiet partner is not evidence that you're bad at this. Volume is not feedback. Measuring your own performance by their decibels is the same meter myth, pointed at yourself.
One more honesty note about the source map above: it describes typical patterns, and it isn't exhaustive. People whose sensory processing or expression works differently — some neurodivergent partners, for instance — may not fit its rows at all. For anyone, the map ends in the same place: talk, don't decode.
